The Shape of a Thought

“My notes aren’t an archive. They’re a greenhouse.”

people often ask me why I have so many folders.

my Obsidian has folders.

my camera roll has albums.

my browser has tabs I’ll probably never reopen.

I even have folders for ideas that don’t exist yet.

at first, I thought I simply liked being organized.

but the more I looked at it, the more I realized…I’m not organizing files; I’m organizing future conversations with myself.

there are notes in my Obsidian that contain nothing but a title.
a sentence.
sometimes just three words.
no explanation.
no conclusion.
just enough for future Lita to stumble one day and think,
”Oh…that’s what I meant.”
it’s almost like leaving breadcrumb for someone walking the same path years later.
the funny thing is…that someone is usually me.

I’ve stopped treating my notes like storage. storage implies the job is finished.
archives preserve the past but my notes don’t do either.

they go.

sometimes an article begins with one sentence I wrote two years ago.

sometimes a random photo from my camera roll suddenly finds its way into a campaign storyboard.

sometimes a quote I highlighted in a book quietly becomes the answer to a question I haven’t even asked yet.

ideas don’t arrive fully formed.

they compost.

which is why I don’t think of my second brain as a library.

I think of it as a greenhouse.

nothing in a greenhouse is finished.

some things are only seeds. some are growing. some have outgrown the pot they started in.

and occasionally…something you forgot you planted begins to bloom.

I used to think creativity meant having good ideas.

now I think it’s something quieter than that.

maybe creativity is simply becoming someone who knows how to recognize an idea when it returns.

because ideas do return. not in the same form, not on the same day.

but they come back wearing different clothes.

the sentence you wrote in January becomes the solution to a problem in July.

the photograph you took because the light looked nice becomes the color palette for a campaign six month later.

the article you saved because “it might be useful someday” quietly changes the way you see the world years later.

nothing was wasted, it was waiting.

maybe that’s why I keep making folders for ideas that don’t exist yet.

I’m not planning my future.

I’m making it easier for future versions of myself to recognize where they’ve been before.

every folder is a conversation postponed.

every unfinished thought is an act of trust.

trust that one day…I’ll become the person who understands why I wrote it.

maybe that’s the real purpose of a second brain.

not to remember everything.

but to become someone worth remembering things for.

still learning.

still collecting.

still leaving breadcrumbs.
